Indica EV in India by 2009 New Delhi | Rabu, Sep 3 2008 IST
Tata Motors today said it expects to unveil the electric version (EV) of its hatchback Indica in the country by next year. ''We could certainly bring the electric version of Tata Indica in India within a year's time,'' Tata Motors Managing Director Ravi Kant told reporters here. The electric cars would be quite expensive and they require infrastructure, he said. ''We are launching the product in Norway as it is making all necessary arrangements required for the electric cars,'' he said. The electric car is being developed in collaboration with a Norway-based firm. ''These will use lithium ion batteries for high energy and power density,'' he added. According to reports, the company is currently working on five prototypes of electric vehicles on the Indica platform. The car will have an approximate range of 200 km on a single recharge which will take about eight hours. Aimed mainly at city driving, Tata Motors' electric car is part of its larger project on developing eco-friendly vehicles. Besides the electric car, the company is also developing an electric version of its mini truck Ace, primarily for exporting to the US and European markets. The electric vehicle on the Ace platform is in advanced stage of development and will be ready for commercial use in a span of two years. -- (UNI) -- 03DC10.xml
