Recalling ''Bheeshma Pitamaha of the Indian politics'', Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today paid homage to the departed CPI(M) leader Surjeet Singh, saying that best tribute to the comrade would be to stay faithful to the ideas and principles for which he stood and worked relentlessly throughout his life. ''He was the most secular and progressive leader, who not only had the burning desire to work for the uplift of poor and downtrodden but at the same time was also open to the progress of the country as he was aware of the slow pace of the country's economy,'' said Dr Singh. A condolence meeting was organised here by the CPI(M) to remember the departed leader. Prominent leaders including External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Left leaders-- general secretary CPI(M) Prakash Karat, general secretary CPI A B Bardhan, general secretary Forward Block T J Chandrachoodan, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury -- RLD chief Ajit Singh, JDU president Sharad Yadav, MDMK leader Vaiko, T R Baalu were present in the condolence meet to show their respect to the great leader, who was instrumental in escalating the Indian politics from one party rule to the coalition era. Surjeet's wife Pritam Kaur and his son were also present on the solemn occasion. Condoling the leader's demise, Mr Karat said it was not only a great loss to the CPI(M) but also a loss of the nation and this was a fact to which even his staunch adversaries would not deny. -- (UNI) -- 08DI68.xml
