Flood hits life in 13 UP districts, rain claims 11 more lives Lucknow | Saturday, Jul 19 2008 IST
Deluge continued to play havoc in 13 districts of Uttar Pradesh, following the spate in rivers due to continuous rains, that reportedly claimed 11 more lives in separate overnight rain-related incidents across the state. Several mammoth and small rivers were in spate due to incessant rainfall in their catchment areas in the last eight days. Ghagra and Sharda, which were the most flooded rivers have affected a large number of population in the villages, in 13 districts which included Basti, Gonda and Behraich. As per the Metereological department, monsoon was active in eastern parts of the state. In the last 24 hours, Bijjnore recorded the maximum of 11 cm rainfall, followed by Bareilly, Sultanpur, Jaunpur and Uska Bazaar, with five cm each, Moradabad and Paliyakala, three cm each, while Kakrahi, Elginbridge and Turtipar stood at two cm each. The weatherman has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall for most of the places in the state in the next 24 hours. According to Central Water Commission (CWC) reports, Ghagra was overflowing by six cm in Turtipar (Ballia), while it was three cm and 17 cm below the danger level in Ayodhya and Elginbridge (Barabanki). Sharda was overflowing by 14 cm in Paliyakala (Lakhimpur Kheri), while it was below the level by 19 cm in Shardanagar. Rest of the rivers were rising in volume, but were flowing below the danger mark, the CWC added. In the last 24 hours, 11 people have died in the rain-related incidents in the state. The fresh casualty comprised three each in Hardoi and Sitapur, two in Shahjahanpur, while one each in Gorakhpur, Basti and Sant Kabirnagar districts. -- (UNI) -- 19DR23.xml
