UPA Govt has been accountable: PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said he was in no mood to judge the performance of his government on its completion of four years, but he had the satisfaction of heading an ''accountable government''. ''I am not going to give any marks on the performance rate or make any judgement. But I can say with all conviction that the UPA government has been an accountable one.'' The Prime Minister was interacting with mediapersons at the dinner hosted by him at his residence on the occasion. He said his government had launched several welfare measures and there was scope for doing much more. On BJP's accusation that the UPA had devalued the Prime Minister's post, Dr Singh said ''It is an attack by a frustrated opposition.'' He said his government was doing everything possible to eliminate terrorism and there was no meaning in levelling charges by the opposition in the aftermath of the Jaipur serial blasts. The government had called three meetings of Chief ministers to discuss the issues of terrorism and Naxalism. ''I will be happy if a political consensus is achieved on all national issues,'' Dr Singh said, adding that ''National problems need national consensus.'' Asked what steps the government was taking when the oil price was rising in the international market, Dr Singh said ''We will not allow our oil companies to bleed.'' On the outcome of the Karnataka elections, the Prime Minister said ''Let us wait for the results''. Asked whether he was optimistic about forming a Congress government in the state, he said ''We are always optimistic.'' UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi said she was not in a position to comment on the Karnataka election. ''We are waiting for the results. I can't say anything now. Let us see.'' -- (UNI) -- 22DI71.xml
