Police arrests godman Himaval for attempted murder, suicide
Aluva | Saturday, May 17 2008 IST

After a morning of high drama, police today arrested self-styled godman Himaval Maheswara Bhadranand on charges of attempted murder and suicide, after he fired two shots in the police station here, injuring himself and a police official. Himaval, an astrologer and ''fixer'', who claims proximity with top state politicians, triggered off the morning drama by calling the reporter of a local television channel and threatening to commit suicide as his reputation had been ''tarnished'' by the media and police.

Yesterday, Himaval was arrested and later let off on bail by Kochi police on charges of tresspassing into a newspaper office and threatening journalists.

Police, on being alerted by the reporter, rushed to Himaval's rented house, where he stays with his mother, and found him sitting with a loaded pistol pointing at his temple and his finger on the trigger. He was brought to the Aluva Circle Inspector's office where he continued to rant against those ''maligning'' him, with the pistol at his temple.

As the police was trying to push out the mediapersons from the scene, Himaval jumped into the melee and fired two shots, injuring himself and Aluva CI Babu Kumar.

A local journalist Baby Karuvely also sustained some injuries after falling down in the scuffle. Himaval, who had sustained a small injury in his hand, was taken to the Aluva Taluk Hospital.
