Nigerian held amid high drama Chennai | Saturday, May 17 2008 IST
Amid high drama, police arrested a Nigerian national in the early hours of today from a slum at suburban Pallavaram where he was hiding after he escaped from his hotel late last night following a raid. Police said Mohammed Sadiq (30) arrived here from Mumbai by flight yesterday morning and checked into a hotel in Pallavaram under a different name. When the police raided the hotel, Sadiq gave them the slip after assaulting a Woman Sub Inspector, Inspector and two constables. He rushed to the backside and jumped from the first floor of the hotel building escaping under a cover of darkness. In the early hours of today, Pallavaram Police got information of a suspicious foreigner hiding in a slum nearby. Armed police immediately rushed to the place and secured him. However, the Nigerian bit the SIM card of his mobile and spit it out. Sadiq did not have any valid documents and the police immediately whisked him away to an undisclosed location where he was being questioned by sleuths of the Q Branch and Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to check if he had any links to drug or terror networks. The incident comes close on the heels of the arrest of three ultras who had allegedly planned to carry out attacks on leaders of a Hindu outfit in the State. -- (UNI) -- 17MS35.xml
