A "visionary" project for traffic cops Chennai | Saturday, May 17 2008 IST
With a view to protect their eyes from the harmful effect of Ultraviolet light, the Chennai Traffic Police personnel were today provided with photochromatic spectacles. The spectacles were given to the traffic police, who were manning the city traffic braving hot sun, by Chennai City Police Commissioner G Nanchil Kumaran, in association with Rajan Eye Care Hospital at a free eye screening camp organised here. Speaking on the occasion, Rajan Eye Care Hospital Medical Director Mohan Rajan said the photochromatic glasses would protect the eyes from exposure to UV rays, which would increase in incidence of cataract and macular degeneration. ''The photochromatic spectacles reduce UV light exposure and prevent cataract and macular degeneration'', Dr Rajan added. Mr Nanchil Kumaran said the eye screening camp would go on for the entire year and the traffic police personnel would be screened for various eye disorders like refractive errors, cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, among others. ''Eye donation awareness campaign will also be part of the camp to propogate the message of eye donation'', he added. The Police Commissioner said about 500 traffic personnel in the city would be given photochromatic spectacles in the first phase. After covering all the traffic policemen, the scheme would be extended all over the State. -- (UNI) -- 17MS2.xml
