Hot and humid weather forecast in NE for another week
Agartala | Saturday, May 17 2008 IST

The National Centre Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) has estimated the onset of the southwest monsoon in Northeastern states by the end of May while forecasting hot and humid weather for another week in the region. NCMRWF officials told UNI over phone today with the favourable conditions of persistent convection over Andaman Sea and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, strengthening and deepening of westerly and southwesterly winds over the region would occur in the coming week.

It would increase the pressure gradient over Bay of Bengal, resulting in widespread rain with isolated heavy rainfall over Andaman and Nicobar Islands and moderate rain over West Bengal and NE states during the end of the month, as the southwest monsoon had been advancing gradually since May 12 into some more parts of southeast Bay of Bengal.

However, the officials stated that light to moderate rain had occurred at many places over Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram and at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya, but dry weather prevailed over Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh during the past week.

The day temperature had changed a little over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram and fell appreciably over Manipur during last 48 hours, the officials said. ''Current meteorological analysis and interpretation of various NWP models indicate formation of a low pressure area over north Andaman Sea during next 24 hours and subsequently, this system is likely to become more marked and move in a northwesterly direction,'' the officials added.

Meanwhile, Meteorologists in the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Tripura region, informed that light to moderate rain or thundershowers were likely to occur at a few places over Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram and the sky would remain partly cloudy and a few spells of rain may occur in Tripura with south westerly wind at average speed of four to five km per hour. Both the maximum and minimum temperature may vary from 34 to 35 and 24 to 25 degrees Celsius respectively, two degrees higher than normal in Tripura for the next two days, and average humidity in the morning would remain over 80 per cent while in the afternoon, it would range from 55 to 60 per cent, ICAR officials stated.
