NPCC calls 12-hour Dimapur bandh on Monday Kohima | Saturday, May 17 2008 IST
The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has called for a 12-hour dawn to dusk Dimapur bandh on May 19 to protest the frequent interfactional clashes leading to killings of Naga brethren as well as the price rise of essential commodities. Addressing a press conference after a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), leader of the Opposition I Imkong said a committee was already formed under the Dimapur District Congress Committee to chalk out the strategy to implement the bandh in Dimapur town and its surrounding areas. ''The bandh has been called in protest against the frequent law and order problem in and around Dimapur, where killings, abductions, intimidations and extortions have been increasing as well as abnormal escalation of prices of essential commodities throughout the state,'' Mr Imkong said. He said the CLP had submitted a memorandum to Nagaland Governor K Sankaranarayanan yesterday, alleging that the state government was neglecting its duties and the Neiphiu Rio government had failed to control the law and order situation and exorbitant price rise. ''We are inclined to believe that the Neiphiu Rio government is directly or indirectly patronising some underground factions, endangering and jeopardising the lives of the public. It is the bounden responsibility of the Chief Minister to protect and defend the lives of the innocent,'' the memorandum stated. ''In the circumstances, the Centre may be asked to step in to save the state and its people and total Constitutional breakdown must be prevented at all costs,'' the memorandum added. Mr Imkong also informed that there was a clash at Wokha between rival factions of the NSCN yesterday where one NSCN (Unification) cadre was killed. Expressing grief over the killings in Dimapur, he termed the situation as ''nothing short of anarchy''. He said the CLP leaders also met the Chief Minister yesterday and submitted a copy of the memorandum to him. -- (UNI) -- 17CA1.xml
