10-year-old mentally affected lives a chained life in Maharastra
Sangli (Maharashtra) | May 13, 2008 7:16:13 PM IST

A ten-year-old girl child suffering from a rare psychic problem of running around in public is compelled to lead a helpless life in Maharashtra's Sangli area.

Sonali has to be kept chained to a cart due to her problem. At times she would wander away while her father is away performing his duty as a Coolie for daily bread.

Besides, she can neither walk nor speak.

There is no one to look after in her family, as her mother deserted the family long ago. Some neighbours take care of her when father leaves for work.

Neighbors give her food and water. The father works as a Hamali (coolie). She is tied entire day. Sometimes it's the leg and at times her hand is tied. It is happening for past three years. We look after her when her father is not around," said neighbours.

"I take care of her, be it food or clothing. She would roam around bare-bodied in nearby different localities like Krishna Hospital and other places. What else can I do other than tying her, as once stray dogs had surrounded her," said Arun Suryavanshi, Sonali's father. run seeks government support to take care of her mentally affected child. It is problematic for me to look after my daughter when she behaves like that. I even have to look after my son. Managing all of these is a problem for me. I urge the government to help me out," Suryavanshi added. By Robin David (ANI)
