Shutdown in Jammu

A shutdown called by several political parties today against the militant attack in Samba has disrupted normal life in Jammu. Shops, markets and commercial establishments were shut and public and private transport was off the road. The shutdown is spearheaded by the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, the National Conference, the BJP, the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party and the Shiv Sena. Jammu Bar Association has also extended support to the shutdown and has suspended work in high court and subordinate courts. On Sunday, security forces stormed a house in Sambha district and killed two militants holed up inside the under-construction house. The Army and BSF units in a joint operation used A rocket launcher to destroy the house under construction where the militants were holed up. Earlier in the exchange of gunfire five people, including a photojournalist and a jawan, were killed and 12 others were injured. Security forces rescued all the five hostages, including three women, from militants' clutches. The security forces had managed to rescue three of the four villagers who had been taken as hostage. One of the women hostages was killed during the exchange of fire raising the death toll to five. A group of heavily armed militants, who are believed to have infiltrated across the border after firing at a BSF post here on Friday, struck at the house of a local political leader Hoshiyar Singh, killing him and his wife Sheshi Balla in Kali Mandi forest belt around 7:50 a.m. (ANI)
