Rural Tourism for NE Guwahati | Sunday, May 11 2008 IST
Buoyed by the success of promoting the North Eastern region for world tourist destination, the Ministry of Tourism is now considering developing rural tourism to sell the region's unique tribal culture. The Union Government has drawn a blue print in this regard and today at Guwahati Union Tourism Secretary S Banerjee oversaw and monitored the progress of various work related to tourism in the region. The tourism secretaries of the entire NE states, including Sikkim, attended the meeting. Over the last six years the Union government had pumped in more than Rs 500 crores. Asked where the money had gone as no visible change could be seen in any of the popular tourist circuits, the Union Tourism secretary said it would take some time to be visible. He, however, admitted obstacles in implementing the projects but asserted that tourist inflow to the region had been increasing. The Ministry is giving special focus on NE selling its land and people as USP. The meeting, however, did not discuss the future of the Inner Line permit. Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh still need special inner line permits to visit their state and this has put off maximum number of tourists. The meeting also could not specify how this could be withdrawn but pushed the ball to the Union Home Ministry. The North East has been lagging behind in promotion of tourism and for that, largely, all the state governments were responsible as they have not been able to market their state well despite being endowed with so much. -- (UNI) -- 11CA27.xml
