The freedom fighters and martyrs of India's First War of Independence were paid rich poetic tributes in a 'Kavya-Sandhya' organised in the seminar hall of Chaudhary Devi Lal University here. A joint venture of the varsity's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and Directorate of Youth Welfare was yesterday presided over by Vice Chancellor Dr K C Bhardwaj. The event began with observing of silence for 57 seconds in the memory of those who laid their lives for the cause of freedom in the struggle of 1857. In his presidential address, Dr Bhardwaj said the struggle of 1857 was the beginning of the India's freedom movement that culminated into the country's freedom from the foreign rule in 1947. ''The freedom we are enjoying today was a fruit of the supreme sacrifice of thousands of over forefathers who fought against the British rule in India,'' he added. Dr Bhardwaj said a large number of Haryanavi's participated in the First War of Independence and it was an established fact that the struggle started in the Ambala Cantonement even before its beginning at Meerut by Mangal Pandey and his team. -- (UNI) -- 11DR71.xml
