Mumbai team wins Microsoft 'Imagine Cup'
Bangalore | Friday, May 9 2008 IST

Team Novices@Work from Institute of Technology, Vivekananda Educational Society, Mumbai, won the India leg of Imagine Cup, Microsoft's annual world-wide premier student technology competition here today.

The theme this year, 'imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable environment,' inspired students to create real world, dynamic and power software solutions with a focus on India. The Mumbai team, Kurnal Dehia, Paras Doshi, Saili Dharia and Veenit Mavani, developed a project which was self-configurable wireless-sensor mesh-network system that monitors and analyses agricultural-soil parameters such as moisture content, nutrient composition, temperature, pressure and light. This system could be used by the government or NGOs on a large scale to provide recommendations to farmers on crop-related decision, the team members said.

The programme, organised in association with NASSCOM, Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE), IIM-Ahmedabad and the Imagine Cup, saw registrations from more than 18,000 Indian students from across the country.

Out of these, the top eight teams were shortlisted to compete for the first prize and the honour of representing the country in the world competition to be held in Italy later this year. Team Skan of Bharti Vidyapeeth College of Engineering, Vivekananda and Fr Conceicao Rodrigues Institute of Technology, both from Mumbai finished runners-up, while Team Green Waves from Delhi University was adjudged the second runners up.
