OnMobile completes deployment of Nuance speech solutions
New Delhi | Sunday, Mar 30 2008 IST

Country's largest VAS and data solutions provider OnMobile today said it has completed the largest global deployment of Nuance speech solutions for telecom value-added services (VAS).

By partnering with Nuance to develop a complete and comprehensive language model for the Indian market, OnMobile will deploy services that support 15 major Indian languages, a company statement said.

With Nuance Voice Search, Indian consumers can simply state their request in their native language, browse the results and then download available content, rather than having to type in keywords or commands on a small mobile phone keypad.

OnMobile was one of the first companies to create VAS voice portals with speech recognition, and advanced the industry by delivering VAS portals. ''We believe speech recognition technology has huge potential in the Indian market, and we're continuing to build on our strategic relationship with Nuance to deliver a quality, cost-effective service with a simple user interface to our customers,'' said OnMobile CTO Mouli Raman.

By introducing unique speech-based features, we are making these portals more interactive and easier to use, thereby enhancing market adoption and driving ARPU for nearly every telecom operator in the country, he added.

Voice portals have experienced rapid market adoption, typically 10 per cent of an operator's user base within four to six months and approximately 25 to 30 per cent of the base within the first year. India is recognised as one of the fastest growing telecom markets in the world with about 300 million mobile and landline subscribers, and the base is growing by seven to eight million users per month.

OnMobile will also expand operations in Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, UAE and other Asia Pacific countries by leveraging Nuance speech recognition solutions to support multiple regional languages, including regional accent English, Malay, Thai, Bhasa, Urdu and Malay.

''Telecommunications carriers are increasingly looking to advanced speech solutions as a means of differentiating their services, driving new revenue, and improving customer loyalty,'' said Nuance Vice President and General Manager (Mobile Search and Communication) Michael Thompson.

OnMobile offers a multi-purpose VAS platform featuring a voice portal, ringback tones, m-Commerce and mobile marketing and its Indian clientele includes leading telecom operators, like Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone, Idea, BSNL and Tata Indicom. Powered by Nuance Voice Search, OnMobile's portals deliver voice-enabled data and search calls to more than 280 million subscribers in India and more than 350 million users globally.
