Web based ECG device wins IIT Tech Fest Award

A device that can act as a wireless ECG using the Web, designed by Ankit Baphna and Palak Mehta from the Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DAIICT), has won them the Qualcomm Innovator Challenge Award held at the IIT Mumbai Techfest, 2008.

The award winning application is based on an idea to monitor the heart beat and send updates to a central server, which can be viewed by anyone with relevant access across the globe on the internet. In case of an emergency, the server detects and immediately dispatches the closest emergency medical team to the location sent by the tracer, a release here stated.

The winners got a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and an internship at Qualcomm, India.

The second prize was won by Devarashi Mandal, IIT-B for his '' Mobile City'', and the third prize went to Shubendra Singh and Kamna Sinha from MIT, Manipal, for their Smart ''SMS Converter''. The panel of judges for the competition included Reliance Communications Head (Product Development Management) Anil Pande, Prof Karandikar from IIT- Mumbai, Netcore CEO Rajesh Jain and Qualcomm Internet Services senior manager Rohit Kapoor.

Started in 1998, Techfest is the annual international science and technology festival, which attracts over 30,000 tech enthusiasts from across the globe, the release added.
