SC bans Jellikattu in Tamil Nadu | Madurai, January 11, 2008 5:09:45 PM IST
The Supreme Court has banned the Jallikattu, the bullfight that is very popular in Tamil Nadu. Supreme Court Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan said, "any event which involved cruelty to animals would not be permitted". The court said the state can organise bull cart race instead of bullfight. The animal right campaigners have long been opposing this sport saying it is cruel although the participants are not trying to kill the bull. Last year one person was killed and 65 others were injured during the festival while in 2005 five people died and more than 200 injured.
Jallikattu is an annual event, which conducts on every Pongal, a harvest festival. The sport is to be believed thousands of years old. Last year Madurai High Court allowed to take place this sport imposing certain conditions. The people in Madurai are against this SC order, as they believe Jallikettu is for the good fortune and prosperity.
