Be informed while contracting NRI marriages: Anu Peshawaria

While marrying a non-resident Indian (NRI) is being seen as the easiest way to get a US citizenship, the rising cases of marital disputes and frauds in such cases highlight the need for an international law to protect the victims.

Ms Anu Peshawaria, an immigration specialist and a social worker in the US, here to participate in "Pravasi Bhartiya Divas" has been pursuing the matter for a long time.

As an immigration lawyer and having come across many failed NRI marriages, she has authored 'The Immigration Dream', which she describes as a step forward in creating awareness about the do's and dont's of NRI marriages. The book is being released tomorrow by Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi.

"My idea of doing this book is to bring across the point that there is a grave need for an international law on international/NRI marriages. These kinds of problems occur when there is no international law on the subject", Ms Peshawaria told UNI. While disputed NRI marriages are in themselves a problem, it is further aggravated when the NRI brides flee the jurisdiction of the US and come to India and file false 498A (dowry harassment) cases.

''Misuse of law does not mean that the law itself is bad.

I am very much for 498A as the scars of mental cruelty stay for a lifetime,'' Ms Peshawaria said, adding that the section just needs to be implemented properly.

The origin of the problem lies in the fact that people do not investigate the antecedents of the person. They just find that this man is an NRI and proceed with the proposal.

"Last time when I came to India in October 2006, I got to know that some 75 lakh women had been sent back to India and were subjected to domestic violence and implicated in false matrimonial cases," she said.
