Gauge conversion in TN to be over soon: Velu

Union Minister of State for Railways R Velu today said the ramaining gauge conversion works in Tamil Nadu will be completed in one-and-half years and the works were underway in 675 kms.

Speaking after the inauguration of Vridhachalm-Salem broad gauge line, he said a proposal was sent to the Railway Ministry for the conversion of 566 km of track in the state.

There were also efforts to meet the energy demands of the Railway in collaboration with National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and various wind power mills.

Stating that 86 railway bridges would be coming up across the state, Mr Velu said the Ministry had decided to lay new lines in Salem-Bangalore, Vizhupuram-Tiruchirapalli and Nagapattinam-Thiruthazhipoondy sectors. Passenger services would be introduced in Cuddalore-Mangalore sector.

Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramdoss, who inaugurated the newly converted sector, said the Union Government had allotted Rs 15,800 crore for improving health services in the country.

A Rs 400-crore cancer research centre would be coming up in Chennai in collaboration with American National Health Research Centre.
