Women from Konkan region to pray for Ramsethu protection
Mumbai | Tuesday, Nov 13 2007 IST

The Konkan region unit of the Ramasethu Raksha Manch today announced that women from all across the region will light lamps at 500 places on November 24 to express their commitment towards the protection of the Ramsethu, an ancient link between India and Sri Lanka.

The bridge, considered to be built by Lord Ram's monkey army on his way to Sri Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from demon king Ravana, is being dredged to build a canal for the easy movement of vessels which will reportedly save time and money. ''A nation-wide campaign is going on throughout the country for the protection of this ancient bridge, which is a symbol of faith for the Hindu community the world over. Even women in large numbers are part and parcel of this campaign. I expect some 10,000 women to take part in our programme on November 24,'' Gita Gunde, woman coordinator of the Rameshwaram Ramasethu Raksha Manch, told reporters here today. According to Ms Gunde, the event falls on a special full moon day, which has a great significance in the Hindu calender year. ''On this particular day, prayers are made to annhilate demonic tendencies and remove the darkness which spreads over the culture.'' ''Rama is the greatest symbol of the Indian culture, and unfortunately the bridge constructed by the Rama is being demolished by the Government of the day. The event of November 24 is aimed at protecting this great heritage,'' she said. She also said such types of programmes will continue throughout the state from November till December 20.
