Ancient Sangam Literature goes 'mobile'
Chennai | Saturday, Jun 23 2007 11:04:42 IST

A team of young entrepreneurs from MobileVeda, incubated at the Vellore Institute of Technology, has come out with Sangam Period Literature ''mobile books.'' The feat is second in succession from the team, which earlier launched a mobile book on 'Periyar Movement' in English. Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Mobileveda Solutions Ganesh Ram said Tamil was one of the most ancient languages in the world and the first Indian language to go on print by the Portuguese 500 years ago. Now, the language is going high-tech with the release of its Sangam Literature as mobile books. The mobile books can be downloaded to computers and transferred to mobile handsets.

''The mobile revolution has brought the Sangam Literature to beam on our mobiles handset,'' an elated Ram said.

Referring to the Periyar Movement on Mobile, he said the book contained various important events in Periyar E V Ramaswamy's life in a format readable on most of the mobile handsets available now.

The MobileVeda is involved in various developmental activities in the field of Mobile Value Added Services (VAS). It also launched a web portal-- www.thinnai.info-- dedicated for mobile books. Mr Ram said the company was in the process of converting all Tamil literature into mobile books. As the first step, the portal has launched more than 40 books ranging from Thirukurral, Patthupattu, Ettuthogai and Silapathikaram. The books are dedicated to Tamils across the world, he added.

He said their next step was to launch a platform where anybody can convert their content into mobile books and easily share it online through their website.

Asked about the new venture, he said it would be a web-based system to reduce the chances of losing mobile handset and significantly mobile theft. The new project would be made available shortly, he added.

He said the innovation was inspired by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and his continued efforts in strengthening Tamil language in the international arena.
