Curfew relaxed in violence-hit Jalna Mumbai | April 11, 2007 1:16:05 PM IST
Curfew was relaxed in Maharashtra's Jalna town this morning, a day after it was imposed following the alleged desecration of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's statue. 4 "The curfew was lifted this morning after restoration of normalcy in Kanhaiya Nagar. We will be reviewing the situation in the evening again," Jalna District Superintendent of Police Chiranjeevi Prasad said. Police have arrested 25 persons in connection with the incident. At least 25 persons were injured, including three in police firing, in Tuesday's protests. Sub-Divisional Police Officer D R Singh is stated to be in serious condition at a Jalna hospital. The violence started after the statue was allegedly garlanded with sandals, which prompted angry Dalit activists to stage demonstrations in protest. A company of the State Reserve Police has been deployed in the area to maintain law and order. (ANI)
