Another debt-ridden farmer in Amravati attempts suicide
Amravati(Maharashtra) | December 22, 2006 9:11:14 PM IST

Another debt-ridden farmer tried to commit suicide to escape harassment by village moneylenders in Maharashtra's Amravati District.

A resident of Sukali village in Amravati District, Ramdas Parise tried to kill himself by consuming pesticides.

"My father had mortgaged our farmland to borrow 2000 rupees and had paid up 4000 rupees to the moneylender. But there was no receipt to show and the lender's men cornered him in the market for more. He was roughed up. Dejected and depressed due to his debt, he consumed poison on returning home," said Ramdas Parise's son Vinod.

Ramdas is admitted in the intensive care unit of the government hospital and is battling for his life.

"Ramdas Parise has been admitted in the government hospital and is receiving treatment. He is unconscious and so we have not been able to record his statement. After the preliminary investigations we will be able to take necessary action," said Prakash Deshmukh, a police officer.

Meanwhile, Ramdas's family holds on to the suicide note in which he has mentioned the reasons for his action and the names of the perpetrators of his act.

Last week, debt-ridden cotton farmers climbed tanks across Amravati District in Maharashtra's Vidarbha region, demanding their debts be waived off.

The region has experienced three consecutive droughts and scores of farmers have committed suicides in the past twelve months in a despair at crop failure and growing indebtedness.

Worried over the spate of suicides among debt-ridden farmers, the Centre in September approved a 170 billion-rupee relief package for four-badly affected states, including Maharashtra. But it has not helped ameliorate the situation and farmers continue to kill themselves. (ANI)
