7 children injured in mishap near Chandrapur
Nagpur | December 21, 2006 4:43:12 PM IST

Seven children were injured, five of them seriously, when a dumper slammed head-on into an auto-rickshaw, in which they were travelling at Ballarshah in Chandrapur district of Vidarbha region of Maharashtra this morning.

The accident occurred when the dumper hit the auto-rickshaw while negotiating a turn, police Inspector Yeshwant Ambase at the Chandrapur police control room told UNI over telephone.

Five children who sustained serious injuries were first treated at a government hospital in Chandrapur and were then rushed to Nagpur, he said. The two other children who sustained minor injuries, were discharged after being administered first-aid in Ballarshah itself, Mr Ambase said.

The driver of the auto-rickshaw, Sunil Sudhakar Velhe (40), also sustained minor injuries in the mishap, he added. The driver of the dumper, Kailash Koyarkar (26), had been arrested, he said.

Chandrapur district Superintendent of Police (SP) Ravindra Kadam said enraged residents blocked traffic for a while at the accident spot and also tried to torch the truck.

However, the police had dispersed the crowd, and additional force had been deployed at the spot, he added.
