750 Bru militants may surrender in Mizoram Aizawl | October 23, 2006 12:13:44 PM IST
At least 757 activists of the banned Bru National Liberation Front of Mizoram (BNLF), which is based in Tripura, may surrender here today. The laying down of arms is to take place at Naisinghpara, a remote tribal hamlet in Tripura's North Tripura district bordering Mizoram and therebels are expected to be repatriated from Tripura to Tuipuibari in Mizoram on October 27. The state government has reportedly agreed to give each rebel Rs 40,000 as compensation for their surrenderof weapons, free ration for one year and transit-camp accommodation till they become self-reliant. Steps to pardon the rebels will also be activated, the state police said. The Bru National Liberation Front (BNLF) is an armed outfit of the Reangs and is currently engaged in negotiations with Mizoram government. It was formed in 1996 following violent clashes between ethnic Mizos and Reang tribesmen in the Mamith sub-division of Mizoram State. The immediate cause of the conflict was the demand for an Autonomous District Council (ADC) by the Bru National Union (BNU), a political organisation of Reangs that was formed in year 1994. The BNU anchored its demand in the presence of a majority of Reangs in the sub-division, and declared that their rights-political, economic and cultural among others-were not justifiably protected under the prevailing political arrangement. The outfit proclaims its primary objective as the protection of rights and dignity of Reangs. The BNLF also endeavours to protect the religious identity of Reangs, which it claims to be Hinduism. Areas in which BNLF cadres are active include parts of Mizoram, Tripura and Assam. The outfit is involved in selective abduction for ransom, which is a major source of finance for the terrorist group. In this, non-Reangs and Mizo Christians are the primary targets. Monday's reported surrender comes more than three months after the Bru Liberation Front of Mizoram (BLFM), a breakaway faction of the Bru National Liberation Front (BNLF) entered into an alliance with the NLFT, for acquisition of arms as well as insurgency training techniques.
