CPI-M youth wing leader shot Kolkata | October 10, 2006 4:15:06 PM IST
A youth wing leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) was shot and hacked to death near the West Bengal capital by members of a criminal gang, police said. Mihir Mondal, a zonal committee member of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the youth wing of the CPI-M, was shot and hacked to death Monday evening by a gang of criminals at Sonarpur in South 24-Parganas district near here. South 24-Parganas Police Superintendent S.N. Gupta said the incident occurred around 6:45 p.m. Naren Mandal, a friend of Mihir, was also seriously injured in the attack. The duo were sitting in Naren's sari shop when the gang attacked them with firearms and choppers. While Mihir died on the spot, Naren Mondol suffered injuries on his stomach and chest and was admitted to a hospital with bullet and stab injuries. His condition is said to be critical. Local CPI-M MP Sujan Chakraborty rushed to the area and alleged that goons sent by the Trinamool Congress were behind the murder. CPI-M, which has called for a shutdown in the area Wednesday, said the slain youth was killed because he was resisting extortion by the criminals. (IANS)
