Bhiwandi still under prohibitory orders, though violence lulls
Bhiwandi | July 06, 2006 8:12:27 PM IST

The Muslim dominated Bhiwandi town of Maharashtra continued to be under curfew on Thursday, a day after angry people from Muslim community stormed a police station coming up close to a mosque and bodies of two policemen lynched by unknown mob were discovered.

The police said that the situation was tense but under control.

"We had talks with them last night at about 10 O'clock and 10.30 and they promised to maintain peace and amity. We have said that no more construction will be done until the matter is solved by the enquiry committee. Now, the funeral and the procession should be normal and go on," said D Sivanandhan, Commissioner of Police for Thane district under which Bhiwandi falls.

Meanwhile, riot police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) maintained security with the state police on the streets as the State government has ordered a freeze on plans to build a police station, which the Muslim community claims, falls on the site of a graveyard in Bhiwandi.

Security has been stepped up in the area and though offences have been registered for the killing of policemen, no arrest has been made.

"If we are to get it in writing (from the State government) then we are happy and have no grudges. Anyway, we are going to fight for our claim and its violation by following the path of the law. We will take our struggle to the court and not to the public. I am appealing to the folks of Bhiwandi and to any other folks outside the town of Bhiwandi, that I beg of you in the name of Allah, please maintain peace and do not resort to any activities that may bring me shame and notoriety," said Shakeel Raza, the Secretary of the Raza Akademy of Bhiwandi, a Muslim organization.

The under-construction Nizampur Police Station stands on a piece of land, which houses a mosque and a graveyard. The police, however, maintain that the station is being built on government-owned land. But Muslims say the police station was encroaching the mosque's premises.

Police officials said at least 25 personnel were injured on Thursday when the mob stoned them. They had to baton charge to disperse a violent mob, in which at least 15 persons were injured. (ANI)
