BEST strike continues, commuters affected
Mumbai | April 22, 2006 12:43:35 AM IST

It was a wait and watch for over 42,000 employees of Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport, (BEST), who went on an indefinite strike here after talks with the management failed over wage revision and arrears, while hundreds of commuters were today found stranded on the roads of this metropolis.

As many as 3,391 buses went off roads following the strike since mignight yesterday. The employees'' two unions have been demanding settlement of outstanding dues of Rs 350 crore.

BEST Kamgar Karmachari Sangatana president Sharad Rao told UNI that first round of talks between the management and union representatives was over today. '''' We are waiting for the response of BEST management,'''' he said, adding the talks were held at the initiative of city Mayor Datta Dalvi.

Though Maharashtra Government has invoked the Essential Service Maintenance Act (ESMA), it has not yet been applied against the striking employees.

Office goers were hit hard by the strike as cabs and auto-richshaws had a profitable day.
