Traffic on Howrah bridge to be scanned

As an unprecedented security cover envelops Bengal for tomorrow's second phase polls, vehicles crossing the famous Howrah bridge are likely to come under the scanner for the next 24 hours.Security personnel, posted at bridge ends would stop any vehicles, even pedestrians for checking, if necessary, from this evening till the end of polling, official sources said. About 100,000 vehicles and two million people cross the bridge --one of the busiest in the world-- that runs over the Hooghly river connecting the twin cities of Howrah and Kolkata. The sources said checking would be undertaken if the security personnel detect any suspicious movement. The measures are being taken to eliminate any possibility of miscreants and arms being transported to Howrah, going to polls along with East Midnapore, Hooghly and Nadia districts tomorrow, they said. Monitoring of traffic would also be maintained on the Vidyasagar bridge and Vivekananda setu, both joining Howrah with Kolkata. However, stress would be more on keeping a strict vigil on the Howrah bridge because of the massive flow of vehicles running to and from Howrah everyday, the sources said. UNI KDG KK RR HS1309
