Pakistan to observe 400th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Arjun Dev Amritsar | April 14, 2006 6:06:33 PM IST Arrangements are being made in Pakistan to observe the 400th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth spiritual leader of Sikhs. The Pakistan Government is likely to constitute a high level committee for the management of the event. The committee is likely to be headed by Pakistan Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. Guru Arjan Dev was the youngest son of Guru Ram Das and Mata Bhani. He was born at Goindwal on April 15, 1563. Eventually Arjan Dev was invested with the Guruship by his father Guru Ram Das in 1581. He was the Sikh community's guru till 1606. he mega function is to be held in June at the Gurdwara Dera Sahib in Lahore. Informed sources said that they expect over 50,000 Sikhs to attend the event, which is being observed for the first time in Pakistan with government approval.Pritpal Singh, the convener of the American Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (AGPC), informed ANI over phone from Islamabad on Friday that a delegation of representatives of various Sikh organizations of the world would meet Prime Minister Aziz on Saturday and request him to chair the committee looking into the martyrdom celebrations.Pritpal also said that the delegation would petition the Prime Minister for providing a corridor to Gurdwara Kartarpur and ease visa restrictions for Indian Sikh devotees.The Sikh delegation is presently in Pakistan to participate in the Baisakhi celebrations at Hasanabdal.
