Karunanidhi kicks off assembly poll campaign Chennai | April 10, 2006 9:15:05 PM IST
DMK president M. Karunanidhi Monday launched his own election campaign in Tamil Nadu's Chepauk constituency.Sporting his trademark dark glasses and his lucky mascot yellow shawl, Karunanidhi kicked off the campaign in a van driving slowly through the congested Chintadiripet area of the constituency. Flanked by son M.K. Stalin and nephew Dayanidhi Maran - union IT minister, the octogenarian leader acknowledged the greetings of supporters lining his route. This is the third time he is contesting from the smallest assembly constituency of the state. He had won last time by a margin of about 4,000 votes. His main opponent is Dawood Mian Khan of the AIADMK, grandson of Muslim leader Quaid-e-Millat. The constituency has a large Muslim presence. (IANS)
