AUDF in limelight in second phase Guwahati | April 10, 2006 4:34:19 PM IST
The newly-floated Asom United Democratic Front (AUDF), a combination of over a dozen minority political groups, is in the spotlight in the second phase assembly election. This is so because today's election is being held in a large number of constituencies dominated by immigrant religious minority voters spread over at least five western Asom districts, traditionally considered a Congress bastion. The AUDF, floated in September at the initiative of businessman-politician and president of state Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, Badaruddin Ajmal, is poised to play spoilsport for the Congress in minority dominated areas. The AUDF was formed to 'teach' the ruling Congress a 'lesson' in the polls for its 'failure' to defend the IMDT act in the Supreme Court. The act was like a shield for minority citizens against possible harassment during detection of illegal migrants in Asom. Last July the court struck down the act terming it unconstitutional. All eyes are now on the AUDF and Mr Ajmal who is contesting from Jamunamukh and South Salmara. Mr Ajmal, considered close to the Congress, took a plunge in the state's electoral politics for the first time. A fair performance by his party will lead to radical change in minority politics besides helping the AUDF acquire a position of strength in Asom politics. UNI XC PL AB 1537
