Cong workers arrested Kancheepuram Tamil Nadu | April 10, 2006 4:33:56 PM IST
Police today arrested 26 Congress workers, including 16 women, who were fasting before Rajiv Gandhi memorial, near here, demanding replacement of Vellore constituency candidate C Gnanasekaran in the Tamil Nadu assembly polls.Police said more than 50 Congress workers led by party's Vellore District Lawyer Cell in-charge R Krishnakumar resorted to agitation, without seeking the permission of police. The demonstrators alleged that Mr Gnanasekaran, despite getting nominated for the third time, did not do anything worthwhile for the constituency so they wanted the opportunity to be given to a deserving person in the party. A police team rushed to the spot and asked the demonstrators to leave the place peacefully. They were arrested when they did not relent, police added. UNI XR KVV SB DS1610
