Second phase campaigning for Asom polls end today Guwahati | April 08, 2006 10:08:47 AM IST
Campaigning for the second phase of Assembly elections in Asom will conclude today. Elections for the second phase will be held in 61 constituencies spread over 12 districts on April 10. Some 8.2 million voters will decide the fortunes of 482 candidates in 61 constituencies in the final phase. The political parties are making their last ditch effort to woo voters. The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were seen busy campaigning ahead of the second phase. The battlelines for the polls are already drawn with the Congress taking on the AGP, even as other parties are trying to influence the electoral balance and have their own say in government formation. The Congress is harping on the theme of peace, development and protection to genuine Indian minorities, while the opposition is trying to whip up the sensitive issue of Bangladeshi illegal infiltration. Meanwhile, apprehensions persist regarding the low turnout of electors, as rainy weather is playing a spoilsport in the election process. The weather office has also predicted rain in the coming days. The Election Commission (EC) sources said that heavy rains in the past few days have disrupted the campaigning, and forced them to take extra measures, as the rivers are in spate in many areas. The areas in lower Asom are facing problem as a good number of polling stations are in the flood-prone plains. There are nearly 30 percent polling stations in the area. Besides the election officials, the political parties are also affected by the persistent rains. The Asom United Democratic Front (AUDF) president Badaruddin Ajmal has come out with an innovative idea of delivering speech through his mobile if he fails to reach the venue of the campaign meeting because of the weather. The Congress party and the BJP are using helicopters for campaigning. (ANI)
