Cong workers oppose Jayakumar's admission to party Pondicherry | April 07, 2006 5:47:18 PM IST
Congress functionaries from Villianur constituency here today opposed the admission of TMC president Theni C Jayakumar, into the Congress party. The functionaries led by former minister Ananda Bhaskaran and NIT Narayanasamy held a meeting and adopted a resolution opposing the admission of Mr Jayakumar into the party. Along with their supporters, they reached the Congress party office and handed over the resolution to the PCC president P Shanmugham, who reportedly agreed to consider the same. Not satisfied with Mr Shanmugham's reply, the workers blocked the road in front of his car. However, party functionaries pacified the protestors following which they allowed the car to proceed. Later, they put up a road blockade in front of the Congress party office and staged a dharna. Mr Jayakumar and Mr Namasivayam were elected in the TMC ticket in the last elections. However, when TMC was merged with the Congress, Mr Namasivayam joined the Congress, but Mr Jayakumar then maintained that he was the real TMC and was identified as a member of TMC (Moopanaar) in the Pondicherry Legislative Assembly. With the formation of the Mega alliance Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) Mr Jayakumar felt that he may not be able to win from Villianur and aspired to join the Congress and contest the Villianur seat in the Congress ticket.
