TN Governor Sitting Over Cable TV Bill: Jaya Karaikudi Tamil Nadu | April 07, 2006 12:34:08 AM IST
Reiterating the AIADMK’s commitment to prevent monopoly in the media, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today said the state Governor was yet to give his assent to the Cable TV Bill, passed in the concluding session of the Assembly, despite several reminders.Addressing mediapersons here during election campaign in Sivaganga district, she asserted that the AIADMK, after emerging victorious in the elections, would take necessary legal actions to secure the Governor’s assent. The state government had sent many reminders to the Raj Bhavan, urging assent for the bill, providing for the state to take over the Cable TV industry. So far, the Government had not received any communication, she added. The bill was passed with the objective of preventing monopoly in the media, she clarified. On the DMK’s manifesto, promising rice at Rs two per kg, the Chief Minister said, ''It is not practically possible.'' Mr Karunanidhi was making wrong calculations, she added. The state, receiving rice from the Centre at the rate of Rs 8.30 per kg, was supplying through the PDS at Rs 3.50 per kg, incurring a heavy expenditure on the exchequer, she pointed out. Taunting the DMK leadership further, she quipped that Mr Karunanidhi need not wait to become Chief Minister to provide subsidised rice because, the DMK, enjoying power at the Centre, could do that even now. ''It is in a commanding position,'' she pointed out and asked why they were waiting to come back to power?” Criticising Union Ministers from the Tamil Nadu, she accused them of stalling many development projects in the state. In her campaign, the Chief Minister who used to seek votes on the performance plank, listing the various achievements of her administration, blamed Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram of being responsible for the collapse of the Sivaganga District Central Cooperative Bank. She had taken steps to revive the bank, which had turned bankrupt during the previous DMK rule. But Mr Chidambaram has been claiming credit for her efforts, she added. The whirlwind tour of the Chief Minister evoked a mixed response from the electorate and there was moderate turnout for her roadshow in this region. UNI CR PA BS2252
