BJP for legislation to prevent conversions if voted to power
Chennai | April 06, 2006 4:34:12 PM IST

Reiterating its commitment to Hindutva ideology, the Tamil Nadu unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today resolved to bring in a legislation to prevent forcible religious coversions if it is voted to power in the May eight Assembly elections.

Releasing the party's election manifesto at the party headquarters here, BJP state president C P Radhakrishnan said the party would face the election by highlighting that ''Hindutuva is the real form of democracy and secularism.'' The party, which had formed a third front for the ensuing elections after being spurned by the ruling AIADMK, promised to speed up industrial and agricultural growth in the state.

''The BJP will create industrial development centres and medical speciality centres at regional level and strive to accelerate the economic growth of the state,'' it said.

Stating that the party would oppose religious-based reservations, it said the reservation for scheduled caste and scheduled tribe would be offered only to Hindus and not to converts.

The BJP said it would also enact an Act to prohibit cow slaughter in the state and transfer of cattle to other states for meat.

The BJP, which had forged an alliance with the Janata Party and numerous small parties, had announced that it would contest 183 seats in the election and released the first list of candidates.
