Pawar might go with Congress in Assam Guwahati | April 06, 2006 2:15:10 PM IST
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar has hinted at supporting the Congress in Assam in the event of a hung assembly."We are keeping all options open for a coalition government in Assam although we are not going to support any combinations that include the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)," Pawar told journalists here. Pawar arrived in Guwahati Wednesday on a two-day visit to campaign for the NCP for the second and final phase of voting on April 10. The NCP has put up 45 candidates and has an electoral understanding with the breakaway Asom Gana Parishad (Progressive) led by former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and the newly formed Asom United Democratic Front (AUDF). In the 2001 assembly elections, the NCP won three seats. Pawar said the mandate in the elections is unlikely to be a decisive one and predicted a hung assembly. "We can go for government formation either with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) or even the Congress subject to approval from the state unit of our party," he said. Voting for 65 seats in the first phase concluded Monday. The second and final phase of voting is set for April 10 in the remaining 61 of the 126 assembly constituencies. (IANS)
