Sonia visits Asom to campaign for second phase Assembly elections
Guwahati | April 06, 2006 1:06:22 PM IST

Ahead of the second phase of state Assembly elections in Asom, Congress president Sonia Gandhi will undertake another day-long visit to the State for second leg campaigning today.

The elections for the second phase will be held in 61 constituencies spread over 12 districts. Gandhi, who had been the star campaigner for the party, is scheduled to address three election rallies - one each in Nagaon, Mangaldoi and Dhubri.

For the first phase of Assembly elections, which was held on April 3, Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh were the major campaigners for the Congress. But the second and the final phase of campaign will see a host of other campaigners.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Rajashekhar Reddy and young Parliamentarian Sachin Pilot are already in the state. More campaigners are expected to visit before the last phase of elections scheduled on April 10.

According to Congress spokesperson Bobbeeta Sharmas information, Sonia will arrive in Guwahati before noon and immediately leave for Nagaon for a public meeting. From there she will go to Mangaldoi for another meeting at 1:15 p. m.

Then she will get back to Guwahati airport and will proceed to Dhubri for a rally at 3:25 p.m. She will return to Delhi in the evening via Guwahati.

The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are also busy campaigning ahead of the second phase. The battle lines for the polls are already drawn with the Congress taking on the AGP, even as other parties are trying to influence the electoral balance and have their own say in government formation.

Illegal influx of Bangladeshis into Asom tops the campaign issue for the Opposition parties with the Congress party trying to underplay it.

Political parties are also focussing their attention on the insurgency issue in their bid to capture the vote bank. The 27-year-old Asom insurgency problem is also on the top of the agendas of all political parties. (ANI)
