EC takes note of Pramod Mahajan's press meet before Asom polls New Delhi | April 02, 2006 7:34:00 PM IST
The Election Commission today directed the chief electoral officer of Asom to instruct district collector of Kamrup metro district to file a case against BJP leader Pramod Mahajan for holding a press conference after closure of campaign period for the Asom assembly elections. The EC received a report from the chief electoral officer of Assam that Mr Mahajan held a press conference at 1600 hrs yesterday in Guwahati. It said a case must be filed before a competent authority under section 126 clause 1-A of the Peoples Representation Act 1951 which prohibits convening, holding, attending, joining or addressing any public meeting or procession in connection with elections during a period of 48 hours ending with hour fixed for conclusion of poll. The EC said holding a press conference amounts to hold a public meeting under clause 2 of the above act. UNI SU MSJ BD1825
