AIMMK criticises DMK for failing to fulfil promise
Chennai | March 30, 2006 5:45:05 PM IST

The All India Muvendhar Munnani Kazhagam (AIMMK) today strongly criticised the DMK not alloting it tickets for the May 8 assembly polls.

Talking to newspersons here today, AIMMK's Founder President N Sethuraman said the party was with the DMK front in the past six years and supported its decisions.

He said the DMK President M Karunanidhi had promised him that his party would be allotted Tirumangalam assembly constituency.

Based on the assurance, AIMMK nominated Ocha Thevar as its candidate to contest on the DMK's official symbol of the 'Rising Sun'. Ocha Thevar became a member of the DMK to be able to contest, he added.

Dr Sethuraman said despite this, Mr Karunanidhi asked him yesterday to contest from Tirumangalam instead of Mr Thevar.

He said he had informed Mr Karunanidhi that after entering in politics, he had not opted to become a Legislature or a member of Parliament.

Dr Sethuraman said Mr Karunanidhi had put the AIMMK in an embarrassing situation by not choosing a candidate on its own.

He alleged that Mr Karunanidhi did not like the AIMMK as the AIMMK is joining hands with the Tamil Protection Movement along with the Dalit Panthers Of India (DPI) and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), among others.

He claimed if Mr Karunanidhi is elected to power, the State would witness communal clashes, which was stopped during the AIADMK regime.

He alleged Mr Karunanidhi preferred communal clashes for his and his family members survival.

Dr Sethuraman said the party's State Executive, would meet here on April two and decide their strategy for the ensuing poll.

Many political parties, including the BJP wanted to forge an alliance with the AIMMK, but his party was yet to decide about it, he added.
