Congress, Karunakaran's party agree on seat sharing
Thiruvananthapuram | March 24, 2006 1:15:21 AM IST

The Congress and veteran leader K. Karunakaran's party Thursday agreed on a seat-sharing agreement for the upcoming polls in Kerala and decided the two would merge after the polls.

The agreement was thrashed out at a marathon meeting attended by Congress leaders Veerappa Moily and Ramesh Chennithala, E.T. Mohammed Basheer and P.K. Kunhali Kutty of the Indian Union Muslim League and Karunakaran's son K. Muraleedharan.

The former Congress leader's party - Democratic Indira Congress-Karunakaran - will contest 18 seats in the elections under the banner of the United Democratic Front (UDF) that is led by the Congress, sources said.

The ruling UDF plans to contest all 140 seats in the state assembly.

The sources said Karunakaran's party had also agreed to accept the leadership of Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Following the talks, the five leaders went to Karunakaran's house to sign a pact on the veteran leader merging his party with the Congress after the polls.
