Disclosing this at a one-day seminar on 'Housing For All', organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here, he said the housing shortage in the country was estimated at 24.7 million at the end of the Xth Five Year Plan. ''Given the magnitude of the housing shortage and budgetary constraints of both Central and State governments, it is imperative that the real estate sector is encouraged fully to play its due role in helping us achieve our goal of providing housing for all,'' he said. Stating the government of Andhra Pradesh has taken various initiatives under the PPP model in the housing sector, Mr Reddy said the government has devised a model integrated townships plan and is in the process of allotting 100 acre in each of the municipal corporations, 50 acre in each of the municipalities, and 10 acres in each mandal. These townships would help in addressing the housing shortage in the State to some extent. In addition, the State government alone is constructing 26,000 flats in and around Hyderabad and 50,000 flats across the State under its own Rajiv Swagruha Scheme, said the Minister. Mr Ratna Kumar, Additional Secretary, Housing Department, Government of Andhra Pradesh, said there is an acute shortage of housing for below-poverty line (BPL) people in the country. In view of this, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has taken up a massive housing scheme under Indiramma Programme.
