Claremont Colleges sells rare instruments Claremont, Calif. | May 10, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
California's Claremont Colleges has sold its historic collection of 1,200 instruments to the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, faculty members said. The rare collection includes an 18th-century Italian mandolin, Civil War-era brasses and an African gourd fiddle among many other unusual items, the Los Angles Times reported Monday. The prized instruments were rarely available for showing to the public reportedly because Claremont Colleges couldn't afford to properly maintain them at the Fiske Museum. Some employees are upset the the school is giving up the collection without more of a fight. To be honest, it's truly shocking to me that CUC is willing to sell off the collection -- period, said Robert Zappulla, music department chairman at Claremont Graduate University. Barbara Jefferson, advancement director of the Claremont University Consortium, said she believes the move is a win-win situation. This is a rare opportunity to keep the collection together. The stars just lined up for this, she told the Times. (UPI)
