More financial cuts facing BBC Scotland Edinburgh, Scotland | July 24, 2006 12:01:13 AM IST
London managers of BBC Scotland have ordered a 25 percent cut in all expenditures, prompting many employees to fear for their jobs, a report says. The Scotsman said Blair Jenkins, head of news and current affairs for the network, has resigned after saying such drastic cuts could only damage the quality of programming. The BBC has already reduced its staff by 15 percent through the release of 195 employees, with over a fifth of those coming fro the news and current affairs section, the newspaper said. Speculation has grown over the possibility of a strike by BBC employees in response to such drastic cuts, which may ultimately include series such as Newsnight Scotland and Frontline Scotland, the newspaper said. If this latest round of cuts is confirmed it is totally unacceptable, said Alex Neil, the Nationalist member of the Scottish Parliament. ... They are now cutting into the very bone of BBC Scotland and there is no way that quality can survive intact if this magnitude of cuts goes ahead. The Scotsman said that a spokesman for BBC Scotland has not ruled out the possibility of further cuts to the network. (UPI)
