Air travel has slowed over the years Washington | May 10, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
The time it takes for planes to get from departure gate to arrival gate has increased over the past 20 years, industry analysts said. Flight times from Las Vegas to New York that took 4 hours and 37 minutes in 1988, now takes more than 6 hours, USA Today reported Friday. The average speed for air travel, which includes time taxiing, but not waiting at the gate, fell from 358 mph in 1998 to 342 mph in 2007, due in part to new planes, which are slower and more efficient, the report said. Slower speeds brought an escalation of labor costs. Crews on the ground and in the air contribute to fewer flights per shift when the speed of travel declines. Passengers may not be aware that air travel has slowed because airlines have incorporated the longer times into their schedules. Almost 90 percent of the routes studied by USA Today were scheduled to take longer than they did in 1988. (UPI)
