Final rule issued on U.S. mine seals Washington | May 10, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
The Mine Safety and Health Administration issued a final rule Friday to enhance safety in U.S. mines with sealed-off abandoned areas. The ruling increases the amount of pressure seals must withstand in the event of an explosion, the Department of Labor said in a release. This final rule goes beyond the requirements Congress set forth in the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response, said Richard E. Stickler, acting assistant secretary for miner safety and health. New requirements include air sampling behind seals of less than 120 pounds of pressure per square inch, and the evacuation of miners when dangerous conditions are discovered. The final rule also includes new training, record keeping, seal certification practices and the removal of ignition sources, the release said. As it is replacing a temporary order, the rule goes into effect immediately, the department said. (UPI)
