Internet pricing may change to volume Washington | May 10, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
The quickly expanding use of the Internet is causing some companies to consider volume, rather than speed, in their billing, various sources said. By 2010, 20 average homes could match the entire bulk -- measured in bytes -- that was transferred over the Internet in 1995, USA Today reported. The majority of the differences comes from video streaming but games and digital cameras have also added to the amount of information zipping around the Internet. Consumers now pay for speed, a higher price for a faster -- and more seamless -- Internet connection. But, last month, Verizon Wireless introduced two payment plans based on price per byte. The 50-megabyte plan, for $39 a month, can handle roughly 17,000 e-mail messages, the report said. For some, the switch makes sense. If you use more electricity, you pay for more electricity, Larry Irving of the Internet Innovation Alliance told USA Today. This is no different. If a couple of guys are hogging the entirety of the network, we think they should pay, Verizon Chief Technology Officer Richard Lynch said in the article. How much they should pay is balanced on costs. Verizon and AT&T together put $70 billion into increased capacity in the past two years, the report said. (UPI)
