U.S. retail sales up slightly on the week
Washington | May 10, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST

Retail sales in the United States increased 0.9 percent for the week ended April 26, the International Council of Shopping Centers-USB reported Tuesday.

The increase follows a 0.7 percent increase for the week ending April 12.

On a year-over-year basis sales during the week grew by a still anemic pace of 1.9 percent, the report said.

The retail group noted that spending is up against rising gasoline prices, which set a U.S. record during the week at $3.603 per gallon of unleaded -- up nearly 10 cents from the prior week's average price, the report said.

The weather was cooperative for much of the country during the week including bright spots in the Northeast and South Central regions. Shopping, however, was sharply curbed by a late snow storm in the Upper Midwest and the Pacific Northwest regions, the report said.
