Jindal seeks land for Jharkhand steel plant Ranchi | May 29, 2006 2:15:06 PM IST Jindal Steel West (JSW) has sought 7,000 acres of land to start the groundwork for setting up a 10 million-tonne steel plant in Jharkhand. JSW last year signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state to set up the steel plant with an investment of Rs.350 billion. JSW vice-chairperson Sajjan Jindal Sunday met Chief Minister Arjun Munda in Ranchi. Jindal is learnt to have asked the government to provide 7,000 acres of land to set up the steel plant. JSW has already identified Saraikela and Kharwsawa districts for the plant. Talking to reporters after the meeting, Jindal said, "The displaced people will be rehabilitated according to the policy of the state government." Land is a major stumbling block in setting up news industries in the state. Jharkhand has signed MoUs worth of Rs.1.91 trillion with 42 investors in the last two years in mining, steel, power and other sectors. To translate the MoUs into reality the state needs 60,000 acres of land. Jindal representatives were chased away by villagers three months ago when they went to survey land for the proposed steel plant. Most opposition parties have opposed the displacement of people. But a senior government official told IANS: "We have already acquired 6,000 acres of land." (IANS)
